Is Your E-Cig A Spy?

Your electronic cig may be doing more than giving you pleasure. It is a digital device that hackers could have repurposed into a tool that can invade cyber security systems. You’re probably looking at your e-cig right now trying to figure out how they could possibly do this, right?

Well, that USB port that you use to charge your e-cig is a hacker’s entrance. Computer security experts have found that hackers are using these devices to attack computers by intruding with network traffic or making the e-cig see the vape a being a keyboard or a mouse.

can ecigs infect your computer

With 20 lines (or less) of code, the computer can download an arbitrary file that is potentially dangerous and run it. Fortunately, e-cigs don’t have that much space to hose any such code. Most malware, such as “The WannaCry” malware, will use anywhere from 4 to 5MB of space, and an e-cig doesn’t have that much space in it.

Healthy For You But Not Your Computer

After searching all traditional means of malware entry, an executive’s computer was found to be the entry point. The executive had been using his laptop to charge up his e-cig that was made in China. The charger was hardcoded with the malware and when the executive plugged it into the USB port, the malware signaled home and the company’s entire system was infected.

This isn’t the first time something like this has happened though. Malware on a production line has been around and infected MP3 players, digital photo frames, and more. One instance was in 2008, when a batch of Samsung digital phot frames had malware on the install disc.

The Bad USB Device

Just as much of a concern are the proof-of-concept attacks recently called “BadUSB”. USB devices are reprogrammed at the hardware level and the USB controller chips that are widely used, such as thumb drives, are not protected from this type of reprogramming.

What Can Be Done To Keep Info Safe?

The first step is to make sure your computer has a security patch installed and you have a strong password to lock it when you’re away.  And instead of plugging your electronic cigarette into the USB port to charge it, use a standard outlet. Yes, that is one of the benefit features of e-cigs, but it is also a way to get to your computer. And most important, never allow your computer to be used for charging up anyone else’s devices, electronic cigarette or otherwise.

So, are we saying put away that electronic cigarette and go back to the traditional tobacco uses? Absolutely not! But, we are advising to use extreme caution before charging your vapor filled device on your computer whether its desktop or laptop.

But it doesn’t hurt to use this caution with anything you may plug into your USB port does it? Just as there are great minds creating wonderful things like e-cigs, there are just as great minds creating evil things like malware attacks and viruses.

Differences Between Vaping and Traditional Cigarettes

Vaping and electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes or e-cigs) are quite the trends these days. While e-cigs have been available in the U.S. since 2008 and have grown more popular in recent years, the effects of such devices were not known and widely recognized until the last few years. Currently, new evidence is starting to emerge on the short-term effects of e-cigs, as well as their potential positive and negative impact on users’ health.

First, we must understand how e-cigarettes work. E-cigs are battery-powered devices that heat a liquid or oil, which usually contain nicotine mixed with the chemicals glycerin and propylene glycol, along with other flavorings, such as peach, bubble gum, or watermelon, just to name a few. The battery heats the liquid cartridge inserted into the device and converts it into a vapor that users can inhale. As a result, the device delivers nicotine, which is a highly addictive drug, to the user’s body without producing smoke. However, there is a vapor cloud that is expelled after inhalation.

vaping vs smoking

Vaping, on the other hand, is a bit different. While the delivery system is similar, the contents of a vape cartridge can be radically different from that of an e-cig. Namely, the use of a vape pen, which is very similar to the delivery device for e-cigs, and their cartridges are more closely associated with medical marijuana than a traditional e-cigarette at this point. This is a very important distinction to be aware of, especially for those who are exploring the benefits of e-cigs to quit smoking, as well as the criteria and potential pitfalls of medical marijuana.

In vaping, medical marijuana users purchase vape cartridges, which contain their selected strain of cannabis in liquid or tincture form, and load the cartridge into the battery-powered device, which is known as a vape pen, just like with a traditional e-cig. However, medical marijuana cartridges do not contain any nicotine.

Another important difference between vaping and traditional e-cigs is that medical marijuana users are often not smokers, and therefore, many of the concerns and/or side effects attributed to traditional e-cig users, who are often current or former smokers, do not apply to vapers.

Some of the health effects associated with e-cigs include an increased risk of heart attack, stroke, elevated blood pressure, slower or drawn-out smoking cessation rates, respiratory issues, cancer, pregnancy risks, etc.

While potential health concerns are being raised about the effects of traditional e-cigarettes, many of these issues do not translate to vaping, especially when practiced by medical marijuana users who are not current or former smokers.

There Are Natural Ways To Quit Smoking

risks from smokingThose who do not smoke and never have, are at a significant lower rate of being diagnosed with any disease that is associated with smoking. Diseases such as heart disease or lung cancer. They also are more likely to have more cash flow because they don’t have that habit to fund. Their auto, health, and home insurance premiums are less, another money saver.

For a smoker, your life can change in so many ways if and when you quit smoking. After hearing and reading about all the health issues that are related to smoking, why wouldn’t you want to quit? And with all the different methods and products that are available today, why would a smoker try to quit cold turkey? Well, there are several reasons to consider natural ways to quit smoking:

The drugs on the market that were designed to help people quit smoking drugs have been known to have side effects, such as Chantix. Available by prescription only, this medication is prescribed for 12 weeks and has successfully helped many to quit smoking.

However, it has side effects that most people dread, such as abnormal dreams, headaches, insomnia, and nausea. It also has been known to affect taste buds can cause constipation, flatulence, and vomiting.

The FDA Announcement

In 2007, it was announced by the FDA via marketing reports, that some patients prescribed Chantix experienced erratic behavior and suicidal behavior. By early February 2009, approximately 800 complaints had been filed with Health Canada regarding the side effects of this drug such as depression, mood swings, and suicidal thoughts.

Its Mind Over Matter Attitude

It has come to the belief of many experts that nicotine replacements simply prolong a smoker’s addiction. A former 30-year smoker, Allen Carr, stated that the entire time he was a smoker, it was a constant withdrawal experience which was why he lit up cigarette after cigarette. It is his opinion that taking a drug that has the habit-forming ingredient of nicotine, it won’t stop the cravings. He expressed to anyone and everyone that a person needs an attitude change to quit.

An attitude change is much less expensive in comparison to buying any of the different quit smoking drugs or nicotine replacements. Popular methods that have been used successfully are acupuncture, cold turkey, hypnosis, lung detox, and programs that are designed to help smokers stop. Any former smoker that has used any of these natural methods high praise because the sooner you can cut out the nicotine intake, the less likely you’ll be to experience the side effects the drugs can generate.

Regardless how long a person has smoked, a natural way of quitting is possible. When it comes down to it, it is mind over matter, aka, your attitude.  The key thing is to keep positive and keep a focus on the changes in your life that are soon to come. Your auto, clothes, home, and most of all yourself, won’t have that disgusting smell anymore. You’ll have more money for things you enjoy. And the biggest perk of all, you’ll lessen your chances of being diagnosed with one of the diseases associated with smoking.
